1 shear coupling plus 1 outer compressor gasket. FREE SHIPPING IN USAWhen The Yak Collection’s website was active in 2021, we refurbished factory shear couplings, offering a core charge, hoping customers would send us their sheared ones.
That inbound product flow never really happened, so now TYC is manufacturing them.
This coupling shears to prevent a locked-up compressor transmitting damage to the accessory drivetrain.
The urban legend that the “Russians used a nail” simply underscores the importance of these shear coupling rivets having the correct hardness value so we had the factory coupling and rivets analyzed for parent material and hardness.
Not only must the rivet shear, the peened-over rim of both coupling halves must retain the sheared rivet pieces within the assembly.
While we offer a one year warranty ( hence brand and the date stamp) realistically these fail every five hundred hours or so.
Less than perfect starting procedures, that result in engine kickbacks, are the best way to shorten these couplings’ service life.
Happily a sheared coupling is reliably diagnosed by your compressed air gauge hovering around the 2 mark ( 20 kg/cm2) but never more, even after a 1 hour flight - the two sheared halves will drag against each other and turn the compressor that much - but no more.
If you have very slow build up, to a higher value- say 3 on the gauge- suspect a clogged compressor exhaust valve, instead of this coupling... (Air is being produced but it can’t get out.)
Gauges that never reach the ideal 3-9 line ( main and emergency tanks needles horizontal) may need a new PRV piston.
All these parts, also the compressor removal wrench set and gaskets are available from this eBay vendor Fishmouth500.
With engine starting, taxying and braking, it’s normal to see some air depletion by the time you reach the runway, however a healthy compressed air recharging system will show rising needles pretty much as soon as you have completed the downwind leg, departing the field.
