This is an
aftermarket
drop-in upgraded-design replacement for Homelite P/N: A02860.
This part is no longer available from Homelite Service Parts.  Egad!  What to do?  By popular request from our customers, we been making a drop-in replacement, using upgraded components and improved assembly techniques to address the most common failure modes.
Do you have a bad capacitor?  Usually, the first sign of a capacitor going bad is reduced voltage.  As the failure progresses, the voltage will get lower and lower (maybe even below 100 VAC).  You may also start to see some "flicker" in any incandescent lighting powered by the generator.  Eventually, the capacitor can fail catastrophically, sometimes resulting in a ruptured or bulged capacitor.  A completely failed capacitor can even prevent the unit from building up AC voltage when started.
Most modern multi-meters are capable of testing electrolytic capacitors like the one used in Homelite's generators.  If you do check it, remember that you must disconnect it from the rectifier first, and it must be checked without the brushes installed.  The value of the OEM part is 270uF.  While you are testing the capacitor, be sure to test the Bridge Rectifier, since a failed rectifier can result in very similar symptoms and can cause a capacitor to fail.
Capacitors have come a long way since the original generator models were designed back in the late 1980's.  Using the very best components available today, this replacement assembly has been re-designed to address many of the common problems that have caused field failures on the original OEM part.
In addition to other modifications, this replacement Capacitor Assembly features the following key improvements:
> New Capacitor is rated for Extra-long life of 3000 hours when
operated at its maximum limits - the original OEM part was only
rated for 1000 hours.
> New Capacitor is rated for higher ripple current - 1.42 amps
compared to .61 amps for the OEM part.  Higher current rating
means longer life.
> New Capacitor is rated for extreme-cold temperature operation
(-40F) - OEM part was only rated for -13F which means it could
fail when you most need it!
> New Capacitor is rated for 250VDC - OEM part was rated for
200VDC. Higher voltage rating results in a longer life and better
tolerance for voltage spikes. Of course, the value (270uF)
remains the same, in order to deliver exactly the same operating
performance as the OEM part.
> New Capacitor features riveted leads - OEM part used PC-board
leads, which were prone to pulling out or breaking away internally.
Lead wires on new assembly are fully strain-relieved to prevent
vibration related failures at connection points - a common failure
point in the original OEM assemblies.
What's more, this upgraded, drop-in replacement assembly comes with a 6-page Full-color Technical Bulletin covering dis-assembly techniques, key inspection points, installation of the new assembly, test and trouble-shooting!  We also include a "Capacitor Clip Upgrade Kit" - this critical kit addresses a common catastrophic failure commonly experienced in older models.
This part fits all inherently-regulated models with the "square" generator end.
