What's the difference of Battery Cable vs Welding Cable?
The quick and easy of it all, is that Battery Cable is less flexible, but with it's stiffness, comes durability. The hard PVC insulation can stand up to more than the welding cable's soft & pliable Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) Insulation. It's also cheaper, due to the low-cost of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and due to it utilizes thicker copper strands, which take less money to create. Battery Cable, due to it's PVC protection and cost, has become widely known as the automotive staple. It does the job at the lowest (most effective) cost point. Max voltage rating of Battery Cable is 50 volts or less.
Welding cable (for most concerns) is simply a very flexible "battery" cable. It's soft & pliable Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) Insulation isn't as robust as PVC, but it still holds it's own in the automotive world. It is also composed of many, MANY more copper strands, that are much thinner than the standard battery cable, giving it much more flexibility. In essence, it loses some protection points, but gains flexibility. However, due to the insulation cost, and the cost to make the copper strands thinner, it of course costs more money. In the end of things, people tend to purchase Welding Cable when they really need the wire to be flexible, for cutting around tight corners and the like. The voltage rating of Welding Cable is also MUCH higher, sitting at a Max of 600 volts.
Which should you buy? Honestly, the one that gets the job done. You're not going to get a "Performance Boost" from this choice, it's more simply down to the choice of "will my cable bend the way I need it to?" And make sure the cable will handle the voltage your working with!

What is the original purpose of welding cable?
Welding cable is designed for use in electric arc-welding machines to power an electrode, a specially designed metal rod, that conducts a charge. The charge carried by the electrode is needed to produce an electric arc, the heat source, between the electrode and the metals, or other materials, being welded. Welding cable is resistant to abrasion, oils, solvents, weather and ozone.
Welding Cable is used for arc welding leads from the secondary side of the power source, typical of welders and welding generators and power supply applications not exceeding 600 volts AC. Because of its flexibility and durability, Welding Cable is often used in automotive battery and truck battery applications and for that reason, we keep an adequate stock of both black and red welding cable. It maintains high flexibility in cold weather and when superior abrasion and chemical resistance is needed, welding cable is what you need. Welding cable can also be used as battery cable. It is a much better, more flexible cable made with a rubber jacket compared to PVC.
