801-2 *EXCEPTIONAL CERAMIC XIXth
NUBIAN MANDOLIN
51 cm (= 20 ')
Superb and rare figure in earthenware slip of the XIXth century on bronze base.
This statuette represents a Nubian street singer with his mandolin.
Its height is 51 cm, and the bronze plate of the base measures.
There is no trademark either outside or under the base inside the base (photo)
.
Just numbers
hollow mold ros and a reference number in black.
This beautiful slip manufacturing may have been made in France or Italy.
Its condition seems perfect, but I must point out an old restoration or neck (see photo 8), another in the left hand (photo 9) and a small chip near the base (photo 10). The price takes into account these small repairs to be carried out (or not).
I think that the bronze base was originally used to maintain a vertical brass bar in the rear hole visible on photo 10. This bar was probably to carry a lighting system. But as the Nubian plays the mandolin, he could not at the same time carry a flare, which allows him to be rid of the lighting system which we used to deck it out.
Very beautiful old achievement in beautiful condition.
