Description
For sale issomething special - a nice pitcher made by the Tucker factory which was located in Philadelphia in about 1835. The Tucker factory, one of the first and most successful of the porcelain factories in the US, was established by William Ellis Tucker in 1826 at Center Square, the site of Philadelphia’s current City Hall. William Tucker died in 1830 after which his brother Thomas Tucker oversaw the day-to-day operations and design while investors like Judge Joseph Hemphill and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were able to provides the funds. They produced porcelain that rivaled popular European porcelain of the same date. The factory closed in 1838. The jug is very typical in terms of shape which helps give it away in terms of identifying the maker. The gilding is another thing that is different for Tucker from say Paris pieces as it wore more easily and the color is different as well. Translucency helps as well with the identity of the maker. The pitcher is hand painted in polychrome with a large floral arrangement on either side with a smaller one to the front and two small one to the top sides. The top handle terminal and spout underside have a relief design to them as does the bottom. A nice example for this maker and not something you see every day either though the pitcher is one of the more "common" item by this maker! A superb piece and I even have its matching companion piece if anyone would like a pair which is extremely rare! The piece is in great condition with a small nibble to the spout edge which might be from when it was made as the gilding goes over it and some glaze lines (not in the porcelain!) on the ones side by the top flower arrangement as shown from when it was made. Typical wear to the gilding and one scratch in a leaf but all in all as nice as one can find! A couple more glaze lines to the inside only. You can see similar pieces in the Philadelphia museum of Art which has the largest collection of Tucker & Hemphill porcelain. The pitcher is about 9.375 inches tall, 7.5 inches from handle to spout tip and 5.5 inches in diameter. Unmarked which is the norm.
